由于不同的取向，两篇译文中译者分别采用了不同的策略。从形式来看，杨译本采取了松散的押韵，基本是隔行押韵。相比之下，杨宪益夫妇的译本虽不是十分流畅，但几乎完全保留了中文的语序和语义，属于异化。杨宪益夫妇翻译的目的是把《红楼梦》介绍到西方，包括它的和价值，让更多的人能欣赏到这部不朽的文学著作，因此更忠实于原文。牛津大学教授大卫·霍克思为翻译《红楼梦》不惜辞去职务，专心埋首于该书全部的英译工作中。他的译文也是不可多得的精品。形式上，霍译本采用了英雄体的押韵方式，每两行押韵。他的译笔功力深邃，翻译的文本读来更加流畅，能够让英国读者读懂故事，属于归化。
