由于不同的取向,两篇译文中译者分别采用了不同的策略。从形式来看,杨译本采取了松散的押韵,基本是隔行押韵。相比之下,杨宪益夫妇的译本虽不是十分流畅,但几乎完全保留了中文的语序和语义,属于异化。杨宪益夫妇翻译的目的是把《红楼梦》介绍到西方,包括它的和价值,让更多的人能欣赏到这部不朽的文学著作,因此更忠实于原文。牛津大学教授大卫·霍克思为翻译《红楼梦》不惜辞去职务,专心埋首于该书全部的英译工作中。他的译文也是不可多得的精品。形式上,霍译本采用了英雄体的押韵方式,每两行押韵。他的译笔功力深邃,翻译的文本读来更加流畅,能够让英国读者读懂故事,属于归化。
