　　从beautiful引申出pretty, handsome和good瞝ooking。 beautiful意为“美丽的，漂亮的”（giving pleasure or delight to the mind or sense），指给人以极大的愉快，几乎达到理想的美，指人时仅用于女性和小孩；pretty“漂亮的，可爱的”（esp.of a woman, a child, on a small fine thing, pleasing or nice to look at, listen to, etc）,多指女性，小孩或小而漂亮的东西，并不表示完美无缺的意思，而着重表示“可爱”；handsome“漂亮的，英俊的”（（esp.of man） good瞝ooking, of attractive appearance, （esp.of woman） attractive with a firm, large appearance rather than a delicate one），形容男性指“容貌端庄、英俊”，形容女性时指“健美”；good瞝ooking“好看的，漂亮的”（attractive）,泛指容貌美，多指男性，有时也指女性。通过以下例句比较其含义及用法：
　　How beautiful the girl is!
　　这女孩好漂亮啊!
　　The baby looks prettier when it smiles.
　　那婴儿笑起来更可爱。
　　She is more handsome than beautiful.
　　她与其说是漂亮，不如说是健美。
　　A good瞝ooking young man walked along the river with a pretty girl.一位漂亮的年轻男子和一位漂亮的姑娘在河边漫步。
　　4.He speaks English fairly well. （adv.）
　　从fairly可以引申出rather,两者都是“相当地，颇有几份”的意思。但fairly常与含有褒义的形容词或副词连用，rather则与表示贬义的形容词或副词连用；此外，rather 可用于比较级和too之前，fairly则不能。比较：
　　My daughter is fairly diligent, but my son is rather lazy .
　　我的女儿颇为勤奋，儿子却相当懒。
　　He is rather better today.
　　他今天好多了。

　　从across可以引申出through,两者意思相近，但含义不同。前者指“横过、越过、穿过”，强调从一边到另一边（from one side to the other）；后者强调穿过两边（in at one side, or end, and out at the other）。比较下列句中across 和through 的含义：
　　They swam across the Yangzi River this summer.
　　今年他们横渡了长江。
　　The train went through some tunnels.
　　火车穿过了几条隧道。
　　通过同、近义词的引申比较，学生扩大了词汇量，弄清了它们之间的异同，掌握了词的正确用法。
