The Cultural History Meaning of Bamboo-books of Chu-tombs in Guodian
Abstract:This thesis has discussed, from the relatively wide angle, the cultural meaning of the Bamboo-books of the Chu-tombs in Guodian and the relationship of the Chu culture and the Central Plains culture. Before the excavation of the Bamboo-books, it was strongly believed in the circle of Chu-cultural history research that the Chu culture was separate from or even opposite to the Central Plains cultrure. This viewpoint was formed based on the uniqueness of the unearthed Chu implements, the distinctness of the Chu culture regarded traditionally, and the records in ancient documents about the Chu“distinguishing it self from the Central Plains”.Because of this viewpoint, the circle of the Chu cultural history research neglected or even misinterpreted the other records in the ancient documents that the Chu people’s viewpoints came from the Central Plains culture and the Central Plains culture spread in the Chu area. Under this academic background, it is of particular importance that the Bamboo-books were excavated, because the Bamboo-books contain both the Confucian and the Taoist works and the works of the two schools embody the contents which had never been seen before. Therefore, the Bamboo-books will be certainly helpful for reexamining the viewpoint that the Chu culture was separate from or even opposite to the Central Plains culture.
