Grammatical Features of Journalistic English

Abstract

Journalistic English is the English language with the features of news and is fit for the requirements of news report and the information spread. On the contrary, the general English is strictly ordered by the traditional English grammar rule. The change of language takes place everyday and new words emerge one after another, the traits of journalistic English should be accuracy, clarity, simplicity, vividness, emphasis and originality besides the general English rules. Through detailed study of 31 news from the famous English Newspaper, such as The New York Times, The Times, The Washington Post, this thesis investigates the syntactical features of journalistic English from tense, quotation, passive voice, sentence pattern, omission and attribute, and finally finds out: (1) using more flexible and changeful tenses; (2) using more direct and indirect quotations; (3) using more the passive voice particularly; (4) using more loose sentences; (5) using more object clauses that conjunction "that" is frequently omitted; (6) using more attributives.

摘  要

新闻英语是具有新闻特性，适合新闻报道要求的语言，是适合新闻信息传播需要的语言。而普通英语是严格地按照传统英语语法规则的。现在语言的变化日新月异，新的词语层出不穷，新闻英语除了符合普通英语的要求以外，还必须讲究正确与明晰，简单和生动，重点和独创。所以，在长期的实践中，新闻英语形成了1些有别于普通英语的语法特点。本文从新闻英语的语法特点中句法的时态、引语、被动时态、句型、省略和定语这几个角度对31则来自于《纽约时报》，《泰晤士报》和《华盛顿邮报》等英语原版报纸的新闻进行详细的研究，结果发现：（1）使用灵活多变的时态；（2）使用直接引语和间接引语频繁；（3）使用特殊的被动语态；（4）使用松散句多；（5）使用引导宾语从句的从属连词“that”经常被省略的句子；（6）使用多重前置定语频繁。
