This thesis is developed from my years of study on campus; numerous people have lent me a helping hand in completing this research.
Firstly, special thanks go to Ms.Wang, the instructor of this paper as well as a respectable teacher in School of Foreign Studies, Hunan University of Science and Technology, whose frequent guidance and invaluable suggestions lead to the accomplishment of the paper. Ms.Wang’s hardworking and responsible spirits set a good example for all the undergraduates of 2006.
Secondly, thanks go to all the university leaders and teachers, who have imparted the essence of knowledge to me, especially to professor Meng Jiangang, who has taught me Linguistics and whose original ideas and interesting lectures make great impression on me and finally lead to the start of the paper.

Abstract
The short novel The Cop and the Anthem by O. Henry can serve as a mirror of social reality—a materially rich land yet a spiritually wasteland in the early 20th century, which is characterized by the loss of human nature. This thesis tries to show the ruthless of capitalist society from the perspective of human nature, and people in material world lose human nature gradually. The struggle of nature elaborates in the following three aspects: the crisis of human nature, the call of human nature, and the failure of the restoration of human nature, the essence of capitalist system is showed up by elaborating of the three aspects. Material pursuit dominates nature gives a lesson to the present.
