中美拒绝言语行为对比研究

A Comparative Study of Refusal Speech Act in China and America

Abstract

With the development of science and technology, the internationalization becomes quite a common phenomenon, and there have been more and more international exchanges. So how to communicate with others in a proper way has become a hot topic currently. In such a special circumstance, just like some speech acts, the refusals vary with situation and culture. This thesis will reveal the culture source which causes the similarities and differences in refusal speech act between Chinese and American based on the previous studies. In the high-context collective Chinese culture, politeness in refusal means recognizing the status discrepancies and using more indirect and implicit face-negotiation strategies. However, in the low-context individual American culture, politeness in refusal stresses equality and attaches more importance to direct face-negotiation strategies. This comparative study contributes a lot to a better understanding of appropriate refusals between Chinese and American English and of the different cultural patterns underlying the perceptions of politeness in refusal.

摘  要

随着经济的发展，科技的进步，全球化趋势的加强，中国与其他国家的交流日益密切。如何正确的使用言语行为与他人交流已成为亟待解决的问题。拒绝言语行为就像其它言语行为1样，受到情景和文化的制约。不同文化之间的拒绝言语行为有相同之处也有差异。本文将基于前人的研究结论，揭示出决定中美拒绝言语行为异同的文化根源。即在强语境以集体注意为主导的汉民族文化中，权势和地位差异对语言策略的选择有明显影响，礼貌拒绝较强调委婉含蓄和为内部成员着想；在弱语境以个人注意为主导的美国文化中，权势地位差异对语言策略的影响很小，礼貌拒绝更侧重与直截了当和不干涉他人自由。本对拒绝言语行为的研究为英汉语学习者提供了可行的拒绝策略，从而可以是使学习者的拒绝言语行为更得体，更符合相应国家的礼貌规范。
