The Absurdity of Albee’s The Zoo Story

Abstract

Although The Zoo Story by Edward Albee was published nearly half a century ago, it still takes on realistic significance. The Zoo Story, though of an absurd style, truly reflects some social problems existing in America. This thesis attempts to uncover the absurdity of The Zoo Story in three parts. The first part is a brief introduction to the development and characteristics of absurd theatre in 20th century. The second part explains the characters, the monologue and the structure of The Zoo Story. The third part discusses the social reality of the theatre from two aspects: indifferent relationship and brutal reality. With the study of the absurdity of The Zoo Story, we tend to help readers have a better understanding of this play and the American society in 20th century.

摘 要

美国荒诞派剧作家爱得华•阿尔比的《动物园的故事》问世已有半个世纪,但1直具有现实意义。虽然《动物园的故事》是1部荒诞戏剧，但它真实的反映了那1时期美国存在的很多社会问题。本文试从3部分来揭示该剧的荒诞性：第1部分大致介绍了20世纪荒诞戏剧的特点以及发展过程。第2部分分析了《动物园的故事》的人物以及独白和结构。第3部分通过两个方面讨论社会现实：冷漠的人际关系以及残酷的社会现实。通过研究《动物园的故事》的荒诞特色，帮助读者更好了解该戏剧和20世纪美国的社会现实。
