On the War Theme in A Farewell to Arms

Abstract
 
Ernest Hemingway was an outstanding modern American writer. Among Hemingway’s many writings of war theme, A Farewell to Arms is a famous one. This thesis is mainly discussing the war theme in A Farewell to Arms, it includes three parts. In the first part, special emphasis is laid on the damage of the war, the war destroys not only Henry’s body but also his love with Catherine. In the second part, it discusses the process of how did Hemingway’s antiwar idea come into being through three phrases: being lost, being against war and calling on resuscitation of humanity. The last part aims at discussing the influence of Hemingway’s war experience and the First World War on his writings of war theme.

摘  要

欧内斯特•海明威（1899—1961）是现代美国文学史上最有影响的作家之1。他创作了1系列以战争为题材的作品。其中《永别了，武器》（1929）是最有代表性的1部。本文旨在探讨《永别了，武器》中的战争主题。分为3个部分。第1部分主要论述了《永别了，武器》中战争给人们带来的危害，战争不仅造成了亨利身体上的伤亡，而且也摧毁了他和凯涉琳的之间的爱情。第2部分从“迷失”， “反战”，到“呼唤人性的回归”3个阶段阐释了海明威的反战思想的成熟过程。最后1部分则探讨了第1次世界大战以及海明威的战争经历对海明威创作所产生的影响。
