隐喻与一词多义的关系

The Relationship Between Metaphor and Polysemy

Abstract
 
In traditional view, metaphor is used for some artistic and rhetorical purpose. In the cognitive view, metaphor is powerful cognitive tools for our conceptualization of abstract categories. Polysemy in English language is a process from a base meaning to other by cognitive tool of human beings. This thesis studies the semantic extension of polysemy, and finds that polysemy is the process of the extension to the other senses from the core by the means of cognitive principles, such as metaphor, which reinforces that polysemy is well motivated. Besides, this thesis will analyze the implications of metaphor applied in language learning and teaching.There are other areas in language learning and teaching where metaphor have some different processes, such as polysemy. In the end, This paper applies prepositions are taken for example to illustrate that meatphor is quite forceful in explaning why and how an individual word can express a multitude of related meanings. This study will help to deepen vocabulary understanding and memorizing.

摘 要

    传统理论认为隐喻的主要功能是1种语言修辞手段，而认知语言学学观点认为隐喻更重要的是1种思维方式和认知世界的途径，英语中的1词多义现象就是人类通过认知手段由1个词的中心意义或基本意义向其他意义延伸。本文从多义词的语义拓展进行研究，认为多义词是通过人类认知手段—隐喻，由1个词的基本意向其他意义拓展的过程，形成了1条由典型意义为中心向外扩展的语义链，进1步证实了词义的扩展不是任意的，词义之间存在1定的关联性。此外，本文还对隐喻在外语教学中的应用进行分析，在英语教学中，隐喻会产生1些不同的变化，比如说：1词多义。在这里，本文以介词为例子有力地说明了如何或怎样利用隐喻把1个单个的单词意思表达成多个相关的意思, 以此来提高对词汇的理解和记忆。
