爱玛人物的性格分析

Abstract

The famous novel Emma, written by British female novelist Jane Austen, describes a distinctive heroine: Emma Woodhouse .The success of the novel Emma lies in its vivid description of the personality of the heroine, a typical British girl in the 19th century. The paper presents the whole process of Emma’s growth of personality. Her concept of equality of marriage in hierarchy, social status appeals her to plunge into the outside world. Her proudness, wrongdoings and confusions in her arrangements of others marriage drive her back to the traditional womanhood, and in the end, led to her submitting to Mr. Knightly, the ideal gentleman of the Author, Jane Austen. The novel shapes vividly the heroine Emma, a typical middle-class girl of alternating personality, by describing Emma’s domination for others’ marriage and the maturity of her own emotion. Emma’s experience has shown that the society helps to form her alternating personality. Conversely, her personality determines her fate: her demerits cause her failure in her flight from traditional womanhood, whereas her honesty helps her face bravely her own faults and obtain her maturity after a series of setbacks.

摘要

英国女作家简•奥斯汀的著名小说的《爱玛》讲述了1位个性独特的女主人公爱玛•伍德豪斯的故事。作者对爱玛这位109世纪典型英国女孩性格的生动描写，使该小说获得了巨大的成功。本文将主要论述爱玛从逃避到回归传统女性地位的整个性格成长过程。爱玛对自主和平等婚姻的强烈渴望，使她毅然走出闺房，投入到外面的世界，而她对婚姻傲慢无知，玩世不恭甚至与之格格不入的态度迫使她最终又回到了传统的女性地位，且被小说中那位完美的绅士奈特利征服。这部小说通过描述爱玛试图主宰和安排他人及自己的婚姻，成功地塑造了爱玛这1位有着多重性格的中产阶级女孩。从爱玛这1人物的成长经历可以看出，社会背景促成其性格，而其多重性格反过来又决定了她的命运：她的缺点导致她试图逃避传统女性地位的失败，而其诚实的本质使她在1系列挫折后勇于面对错误最终获得性格上的成长。
