A Comparative Study of Blanche and Lyuba
Abstract
Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire and Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard show us the downfall of the victims in a despairing world and the destructive fate of the two female protagonists caused by their frailty in the changing and disturbed times lead to their escaping from reality. Blanche and Lyuba refuse to give up the old cultural conception and face the new time. They desperately try every means to keep their dignity and position in modern society. However, the aristocratic tradition in their inner hearts is also mocking at their reconciliation with their unbearable self-indulgences. Their lagging behind the times forces them to seek self-protection, but on the contrary, it turns out to aggravate their frustration which make them doomed to endure unfortunate fate. Through profound analysis of the female protagonists, the attitudes toward the inner world, desire and life revealed in these two works are all calling for profound deliberation. For those who are at a loss and don’t know which way to follow in the dull and dictatorial reality, the incapability to change themselves will be bound to be destroyed by the changeless reality.

摘 要
威廉斯的《欲望号街车》和契诃夫的《樱桃园》通过探讨在不同文化背景下的人物性格及她们与现实社会的矛盾冲突所表现出的象征意义,向我们展示了女主人公布兰琪和留波夫在变迁时代中因脆弱的性格而逃避现实并沦为绝望世界的牺牲品的毁灭性命运。布兰琪与留波夫拒绝放弃旧的文化观念以面对新的时代,她们不顾1切地力图保住她们的尊严和在现代社会中的地位,她们内心深处的贵族传统亦在嘲笑其不堪忍受的自我沉沦的顺从,因此,两位女主人公经受着内心的矛盾煎熬而不得不继续挣扎下去。然而旧的秩序已经将她们抛弃,而她们又不能接受新的变化,与时代的落伍,迫使她们去寻求自我庇护,而结果却加重了她们的挫败感,这种性格的弱点,使其必然遭受不幸的命运。通过对女主人公的深刻剖析,两部剧作所揭示出的对内心,欲望和生活的态度都使人深思,对于在枯乏而独裁的现实生活中无所适从的人们来说,无法改变自己的人必将被不能改变的现实摧毁。
