The Blacks’ Soul under Impact of White Culture:on Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye
Abstract
Toni Morrison, the Noble Prize winner in 1993, is one of the most talented black female writers. She created a series of novels with black females as the protagonist. The Bluest Eye published in 1970 was her first and one of the most important novels .This thesis focuses on interpreting the blacks’ soul under impact of the white dominant culture by analyzing the black images in The Bluest Eye. It is composed of three parts. The first part generalizes two kinds of alienated blacks under the influence of white culture: “blacks of whiten-themselves” and “blacks of split-personalities”. The second part mainly expounds the loss and perplexity of the blacks’ soul under impact of white culture: They adored white culture and considered “white is beauty”; at the same time, they lost their own characteristics consequently. By analyzing the past, the living present and the future of the blacks, the last part concludes that the practical and sensible way for the blacks to survive in white culture is to maintain the ethical heritage and seek for confidence in their own culture.
Key Words: Toni Morrison; The Bluest Eye; black; white; soul
