An Investigation of the Use of Initial-Adverbials in Chinese Learners’ Writings
Abstract
The research covers the usage of adverbials and initial-adverbials, which are used frequently. We collected 30 compositions that come from 2nd year International Trade students. On the basis of the usage of adverbials and initial-adverbials, through analyzing the data, we review the differences of initial adverbial between Chinese and English and its pedagogical implication. As a result, we find common types of initial adverbial in students’ compositions and some problems in Chinese learners’ writings. The research finds initial adverbial is used frequently in students’ compositions, time adverbial and condition adverbial are the most; and preposition and adverb (phrases) led by initial adverbial are also frequently-used. On the other hand, because of the thinking difference of Chinese and English, mother tongue has strong influences on Chinese students’ compositions.

摘 要
本研究覆盖状语及句首状语的使用方法。在了解其使用方法的基础上,我们收集了30篇普通高校国际贸易专业学生的英语作文。通过分析语料, 研究考察了英语和汉语中句首状语使用的异同点,以及其产生的教学意义。根据结果,我们发现学生作文中句首状语使用的普遍类型及写作中的其他1些问题。 调查显示,句首状语在学生作文中大量使用,时间状语和条件状语在作文中出现的频率最高, 且以介词和副词作句首状语的情况最常见。 另外受中英思维差异影响, 母语对中国学生作文的写作有显著影响。
