Commonly-used Translation Techniques Used in the Chinese Translation of The Old Man and the Sea

Abstract

Translation techniques come from the practice of translation. In the process of translation, sometimes the translations of each sentence and each word are extremely correct, but the entire translation is not clear and accurate, the logic is chaotic, and the central idea is fuzzy, because of lacking translation strategies and techniques. Therefore, the mastery of translation techniques is a very important aspect of a good translation. In this thesis, the author attempts to discuss the commonly-used translation techniques used in the Chinese translations of The Old Man and the Sea, illustrating with examples taken from three different Chinese versions of the novel. Through a comparative study of the three Chinese versions (Zhang Ailing’s version, Hai Guan’s version and Wu Lao’s version) of the English novel The Old Man and the Sea, the thesis aims at probing into suitable ways of applying translation techniques to translation practice.

摘  要

翻译技巧来自翻译实践。在翻译过程中，有时每1个句子和每1个词的翻译都非常正确，但是整个译文读起来却条理不清，前后逻辑混乱，中心思想模糊。这就是缺乏翻译策略和技巧。因此翻译技巧是搞好翻译至关重要的1个方面。本文旨在讨论《老人与海》中使用的常用翻译技巧，并以这部小说的3个不同中译本为范例。通过对英文小说《老人与海》3个中译本(张爱玲译本、海关译本和吴劳译本)的比较研究，力图探索如何将翻译技巧更好地融入到翻译实践中去。
