On irony in Pride and Prejudice

Abstract

This thesis discusses the application of irony in Pride and Prejudice, a well-known novel written by Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice continues to be popular today not only because of its memorable characters and the general appeal of the story, but also because of the perfect use of rhetoric. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen displays a masterful use of irony, which heightens the vividness of the characters, prompts the development of the plots and makes it a great realistic comic novel. In this thesis, three types of irony are discussed, namely, verbal irony, dramatic irony and situational irony. The irony in Pride and Prejudice plays an important role in expressing the themes, creating characters and organizing plots and language.

摘  要

《傲慢与偏见》至今还大受欢迎不仅仅是由于它精彩的人物描写和引人入胜的故事情节，还包括作者娴熟地运用了修辞手法。本综合《傲慢与偏见》的创作背景和有关反讽的理论，主要探讨了语言反讽、戏剧反讽和情景反讽在《傲慢与偏见》中的运用。其中，语言反讽主要表现在刻画人物和表达语言方面，戏剧反讽有利地揭示了作者的婚姻观，而情景反讽推动了故事情节的发展和表现了文章的主题。
