On  Translation of  Movie  Titles

Abstract

Nowadays, movie translation is supposed to play an important role in the cross-cultural communication. Nevertheless, up to now there still isn’t a systematic principle piloting movie translation. As a significant branch of movie translation, movie title translation haven’t received due attention. In the present thesis, the author makes a tentative study of movie title translation.
Through analyzing the present situation of movie title translation and exploring the characteristics of movie titles, within the framework of functional equivalence, this article introduces four basic values, namely the informative, the cultural, the aesthetic and the commercial values, and tries to generalize five translating methods with rich examples, which are transliteration, literal translation, liberal translation, and adaptation.

摘  要

虽然当今影视翻译在促进中西文化的交流中变得极其重要，但是至今都没有1套系统的翻译方法来指导电影翻译。而电影片名作为影视翻译的1个重要分支以来都受到人们的忽略, 因此木本文就电影片名的翻译作1个试探性的研究。
本文通过分析中英电影片名的翻译现状和结合电影片名的特点，提出了指导电影片名翻译的4大价值标准，即信息价值、文化价值、审美价值及商业价值，并引用了丰富的例证概括了电影片名翻译的主要方法。
