Abstract
English is regarded as an important tool which helps us to know and understand the world. It becomes more and more important. In present, most schools take English as an academic course. So foreign language educator must attach importance to English teaching. This paper deals with how to carry out quality-oriented education in the English teaching. The writer holds that the schools, the teachers and the students should have an accurate concept of quality-oriented education. In the whole process of English teaching, the teacher must pay attention to heuristic method of teaching, stimulate the students’ interest and motivation, strengthen the students’ determination and emotion in English learning. The teacher should lay more emphasis on creating an easy, harmonious environment suitable for communicative practice; the teacher should develop not only the students’ linguistic competence, but also their communicative competence. Communicative competence will develop through the practice of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. In a word, the teacher is not a judge, but an organizer, a co-operator and a supervisor, the teachers should make good use of the students’ non-intellectual factors, enlarge the students’ knowledge and help them construct their own models of learning. The aim of quality-oriented education in English teaching is to cultivate、improve and perfect the ideal qualities, psychological qualities and intellectual qualities.

英语作为一个帮助我们认识世界和了解世界的工具,它的重要性越来越明显。目前很多高校把英语作为学生主修的一门课程。因此,英语课堂教学这一环也势必引起
外语教育界的高度重视。此论文主要在探研如何在英语课堂上实施素质教育。笔者认为学校、教师、学生必须对英语素质教育有一个明确的概念,在英语教学过程中注重启发式教学,激发学生学习的兴趣与动机,加强他们学习的决心与热情。在启发式教学中应注重创设语境,让学生有一个进行交际活动练习的环境。教师不仅要提高学生的英语能力,还要提高他们的交际能力,通过听、说、读、写、译的练习中发展交际能力,保障交际化英语课堂教学的完善。在整个教学活动中,教师不是一个法官,而是学生的一个组织者,合作者和监督者,教师应发挥学生的非智力因素,扩宽他们的知识面,帮助学生创建一个适合自己的学习模式。英语课堂中素质教育的目的是培养、提高和完善学生的思想素质、身体素质和智力素质。

一、英语教学素质教育的内容
“《国家英语课程标准》明确地把‘激发和培养学生兴趣,帮助学生树立自信心,开发智力,培养观察、记忆、思维、想像、创造能力;了解文化差异,培养爱国主义精神,增强世界意识,为学生的发展和终身学习打下良好的基础’作为英语教学的目的”[3](p196)。可见,英语教学与素质教育密不可分,在英语教学过程中实施素质教育以提高学生的心理素质,语言素质和文化素质。
