Conclusion
The exquisite art of symbolism in presenting the theme-identity can find fully expression in the novel Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. The story of the invisible man exposes to us the Identity Crisis in this indifferent world for the marginal people. The colorful African-American Literary Tradition imparts limitless source and encouragement to the author. Ellison accepts the Tradition and develops it to a higher level and a broader stage. The Double-Consciousness and Blackness are the keys to delve into the protagonist’s invisibility and alienation. The theory of Signifying is one of the most important Black Aesthetics. All these leave great and precious legacy for the writers to follow, and the Race Consciousness is aroused greatly and the upsurge of seeking root appeared in the 1970s in the world. Another contribution Ellison made to the world is his universal theme of African-American novels. Different from the protest novel developed by Richard Wright, the main attention of his theory is paid to the common man’s fate in the world and he introduces the world a real and modern African- American. Ellison overcomes the limitation of race and puts forward a worldwide question for everyone—how can we be accepted as individual in the world. He thinks he is a writer at first, then an African-American writer (金莉&秦亚青 2002: 192). Just as Ellison states that one of the obligations when he committed himself to the art and form of the novel was that of striving for the broadest range, the discovery and articulation of the most exalted values. Ellison probes into a very representative motif or the marginality of African Americans, and he depicts successfully the dilemma of modern lives, and the extreme state of a person’s marginality—invisibility (Wu Lingying & Jiang Jingzhi 2006: 67).
In all, the influence of Ellison on the Black literature is profound. More and more Afro-American writers deviate from the tradition of protest novel or the traditional realism style, but follow the Ellison’s example to combine the realism and modernism, which try to present the black problem in a broad sense. The theme of Ellison’s work eventually includes the major problem faced by all his countrymen in the twentieth century—the problem of American identity (Phillips 1971). The fierce perception and the skillful writing technique win Ellison one of the influential Afro-American writers in the world. (科教范文网 Lw.nsEAc.com编辑整理)
My paper aims at revealing the symbolism of Identity against the backdrop of African-American Literary Tradition and exploring the universal theme conveyed in this novel. Meanwhile, I should admit that my paper is not mature because of my limited knowledge. However, I’ve tried my best to explore the essence of the novel. In the literary universe, Invisible Man is one of the greatest works waiting for more people’s exploration. As a classic, its value is to endow human beings with enlightenment as time passes by.
