Abstract
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was one of originating female writers in British contemporary literature history. The Hours, from her famous novel Mrs. Dalloway, is an American movie reflecting three different women’s different stories. It’s probably best classified as a serious, somewhat highbrow and intellectual film, partly biography of the writer Virginia Woolf, focusing on a period of her life and the turmoil she endured in writing her book Mrs. Dalloway, but also cleverly intertwining this with the impact the story has on the lives of two other women in different times.
In order to show the author Virginia Woolf’s view on death profoundly, The Hours describes three person’s death. The character Woolf takes death as a choice, which influences her life. She thinks that a man should understand his own life and then he can give it up. Laura’s attempting suicide shows that she takes death as a way to escape. She just doesn’t belong to that world of domestic bliss. Throwing himself from the high building, Richard takes death as self-protection, for he can get rid of all the sufferings. Having witnessed her friend’s suicide, Clarissa decides to face her life bravely and cherishes her life. Facing the dilemmas of life and death, the author Virginia Woolf is not pessimistic; instead she firmly believes the possibility of harmony in life. The Hours searching for the harmony between life and death.
Through exploring Virginia Woolf’s death view on three people’s suicide, we can understand our life, face our life, and try to achieve more values in our beautiful life.
