An Analysis of Death in Emily Dickinson’s Poetry
Abstract
     
Death has been an eternal theme in literature. Emily Dickinson, a pioneer of modern American and English poetry, takes a special interest in death and leaves behind her over 500 poems about death. She probes into death from various perspectives with her “inner eyes”. The whole thesis is composed of three parts. The first part briefly introduces the poet Emily Dickinson, the death theme in her poems and why does she choose death as her main theme in her poems. With the death of her father and intimate friends, Dickinson feels so painful and is filled with the terror of death. The second part describes the rich imagination of death expressed in her poems. In order to mitigate her sorrow in her heart, she turns to religion and wants to get some comforts to console herself. She gradually realized that human life is the circulation of birth to death. The last part is the more deep thinking and probing the harmony between life and death. From the endless natural cycles, Dickinson draws an earthy analogy of immortality. In this way, she shakes off the shadow of death and exceeds the death.

摘 要

死亡是文学中1个永恒的主题。英美现代派诗歌先驱艾米莉•狄金森对死亡有着非同1般的兴趣，留下了500多首关于这1主题的诗篇。艾米莉•狄金森在她的死亡诗中“用心灵之眼”对死亡主题进行了多层次，多角度的探索。文章分为3部分，第1部分简要地介绍了诗人艾米莉•狄金森和她诗歌中的死亡主题以及她为什么选择死亡作为她诗歌的主题。随着她父亲和密友的离开，狄金森感到万分痛苦，同时对死亡也充满了恐惧。第2部分描述了她诗歌中关于死亡的丰富想象。为了缓解心中的痛苦，狄金森渴望从宗教中获得安慰以慰藉自己痛苦的心灵。她逐渐认识到生与死是1种循环过程。最后1部分是诗人对死亡的进1步的思索以及对生与死之间和谐关系的探询。从自然不断的轮回中，生与死就是其中的1种，由此她摆脱了死亡的阴影并超越了死亡。
