从母女关系角度看《喜福会》中的文化冲突

Cultural Conflicts in The Joy Luck Club Seen From the Perspective of Mother-daughter Relationship

Abstract

In the past thirty years, Chinese American literature has gained growing attention through the endeavor of the Chinese American writers. The focus of this thesis is on the famous Chinese American writer Amy Tan and her masterpiece The Joy Luck Club (1989), which has established Amy Tan’s important position in American literature and made her a famous Chinese American writer. The thesis attempts to analyze the mother-daughter relationship in detail by presenting the cultural conflicts. The author holds that these conflicts between them are none but the superficial phenomenon of the cultural conflict. Therefore, by analyzing the mother-daughter conflict we can disclose the cultural conflict hidden behind the mother-daughter relationship and have a discussion of the possibility and necessity of the cultural blending. From the analysis of the thesis, it is concluded that different cultural backgrounds cause the conflicts between the two generations and multiple cultures can coexist. Only when people from different cultures are ready to understand and respect the other’s culture and communicate well can they establish harmonious relationship.

摘 要

在过去的310年里，经过美国华裔作家的努力耕耘，美国华裔文学异军突起。本文关注的是著名美国华裔女作家谭恩美和她的处女作《喜福会》。1989年,小说《喜福会》的出版使谭恩美的名字在美国家喻户晓，也奠定了她在美国文学界的重要地位。本文意欲从母女关系角度分析谭恩美作品《喜福会》中4位中国移民母亲和美国长大的女儿之间由于文化冲突引起的充满冲突、微妙而复杂的关系。本文作者认为母女冲突是文化冲突的表层现象。因此, 通过分析其中的母女关系,我们可以揭示隐含在母女关系后面的文化冲突，以及初步探讨两种文化融合的可能性和必然性。通过上述的文本分析得出本篇的结论：文化冲突引起了母女间的矛盾冲突。多元文化是可以并存的，来自不同文化的人们只有理解和尊重对方的文化并善于沟通才会和谐相处。
