A Comparative Study of Two Chinese Versions ofO. Henry: Selected Short Stories

Abstract

A Comparative study of translated text is a valuable approach to enhance the understanding and appreciation of translated text as well as original text. This thesis chose two Chinese versions (translated by Wang Zhongnian and Huang Yuanshen) of O. Henry: Selected Short Stories as its point of observation. By comparing and analyzing these two Chinese versions from the perspectives of domestication and foreignization, we may have a better understanding of the linguistic features and cultural phenomena in the original as well as the translated text. Firstly, this thesis states the definition and dispute of these two strategies. Secondly, the author gives a brief introduction to the features of O.Henry’s short stories and main characteristics of these two Chinese versions. Finally, by comparing these two Chinese versions from the perspectives of words, sentences and style of source text, it reaches to the conclusion that Wang’s version is more favorable than Huang’s version in most cases. However, it also worth noting that both editions entail losses when context and cultural background are taken into consideration.

摘  要

译本比较是提高对译本、原作理解和欣赏水平的有效途径。欧•亨利是美国著名短篇小说家，其作品享誉世界。对其译作进行分析与比较有利于加深对原作语言特征和文化现象的理解。本文从归化与异化角度比较、分析《欧•亨利短篇小说选》的两个中译本(王仲年译本和黄源深译本)。首先，本文给出了归化与异化的定义，回顾了归化异化之争的历史。而后，本文简要介绍了欧•亨利短篇小说及两个中译本的主要特点。最后，通过从词语、句子及原作风格再现这3个角度比较了这两个中译本，从而得出1个结论：在大多数情况下，王仲年的归化译法比黄源深的异化译法更为合理，也更为读者所接受。但同时也应指出，考虑到运用这两种策略时的语境和文化背景，两种译本都存在着1些缺陷。
