The Pursuit of “Self”: On the Theme of Invisible Man

Abstract
 
Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man is one of the best novels in the history of African-American literature. The novel proclaims many themes. And the paper analyzes the most important theme of Invisible Man which also runs through the whole African-American literature: the pursuit of “self”. Searching for “self” includes the pursuits of self-identity and individuality.  Firstly, it analyzes the blacks’ journey of searching for “self” from the status and reasons of blacks’ lack of “self” in American society and searching for the blacks’ identity in African-American literature, put forward the theme of the pursuit of “self”. Secondly, the second part of this paper discusses the blacks’ search for identity. In this part, the paper analyzes the protagonist’s seeking and losing of identity. And the paper points out through his pursuit for identity the protagonist is seen as the epitome of the blacks who are searching for freedom of black. The third part of this paper deals with the protagonist’s struggle for the individuality .The blacks’ search for the individuality is also a main facet of the pursuit of “self.

摘 要
 
拉尔夫•埃里森的《看不见的人》是美国黑人文学史上的1部佳作。该书主题众多,本文分析了其中1个贯穿整个黑人文学的重要主题：黑人对自我的探求。自我探求，包括了对自我身份的确认和对个性的追求。本文首先从黑人在美国社会中身份缺失的原因和现状及美国黑人文学作品中黑人对身份的探求着手，提出了黑人对自我的探求这1主题。本文的第2部分讨论了黑人对自我身份探求，分析了主人公身份缺失和探索的过程。随后，指出主人公通过对自身身份的探求，体现了1个在白人世界寻求黑人自由的新黑人形象。本文第3部分讨论了主人公对个性的追求。对个性的追求也是黑人对自我的探求的1个重要方面。 （科教作文网http://zw.ΝsΕAc.com发布）
