Chinese Thinking Patterns and Logical Argumentation in College English Writing

Abstract

English writing is an essential component of English study. It is not only a goal of students’ study, it is also helpful in improving mental organizational skills and language expressing abilities. At present, however, many problems exist in English writing, which need to be solved. This paper aims to make a comparative analysis between Chinese and western thinking patterns in three aspects which are circular thought vs. linear thought, comprehensive thought vs. analytical thought and concrete thought vs. abstract thought, and demonstrate logical argumentation including logical sequences and logical premises embodied mainly in the collected college English writing materials. And the paper will give some helpful advice to college English writing. It is hoped that it will help students and teachers aware of the problems and therefore improve their writing and teaching respectively.

摘  要

英语写作作为英语学习的1个重要环节，不仅仅是我们学习的1个目标，它还能提高我们的语言组织能力和表达能力。但是目前在我们的英语写作中还存在着许多问题亟待解决。本文旨在通过搜集到的大学英语写作实例，分析中国学生在英语写作中的汉语思维模式及逻辑推理问题。文章主要从3个方面对中西思维模式进行对比分析，即：螺旋型思维vs.直线型思维，理解性思维vs.分析性思维，具体思维vs.抽象思维。对逻辑推理的分析包括逻辑顺序和逻辑前提两个部分。同时还将对英语写作和英语教学给出1些相应的合理建议。希望老师和同学们能充分认识到中式思维对于英语写作的影响，从而提高英语写作和教学能力。
