An Investigation on After-class English Reading of Non-English Majors
Abstract
This thesis reports an empirical study on the after-class English reading activities of the non-English majors. The subjects are non-English majors in Hunan Institute of Science and Technology, and a questionnaire is adopted as the instrument of the research. In the study, particular attention is given to: the time students spend in English reading after class, their purposes in reading, the reading strategies they usually adopt, the problems they meet while reading and the relationship between reading and their English proficiency. The results showe that, in general, the non-English majors don’t spend much time in English reading after class, most students pay some attention to their strategies while reading, and the biggest problem for them is the lack of proper reading materials. At last, some suggestions are put forward for the improvement of reading effeciency to the non-English majors.

摘 要
本文以湖南理工学院非英语专业学生为对象,采用问卷为工具,调查了他们英语课外阅读的情况。调查着重分析了他们课外阅读时间、阅读目的、阅读材料的选择、阅读方法及困难。调查结果显示,1般情况下,非英语专业学生不会花太多时间在课外阅读上,大多数学生在阅读时会注意阅读材料的选择。对他们来说,最大的问题是缺乏合适的阅读材料。最后,针对大学英语阅读学习,文章中提出了1些合理的建议。
