A Cognition-based Study of Color Word Metaphor

Abstract

Metaphor is believed by contemporary cognitive theory that creates from a source domain to another target domain by mapping, and it means to use one categorical understanding to set up or explain another categorical understanding. And color words is the word used to describe the color of object in language. Research on color words is a bridge to know the problem of the relationship between the language and the cognition. Among them, the cognition of color word metaphor is an important tool for human beings to cognize the world. This thesis aims to study the color words of the English and Chinese language from two cognitive aspects: the realistic source and cultural source, and get the following conclusion: the human own the same physiology mechanism and the sense of vision system result in the color world metaphor thus get the similarities; and because of the different cognition way, thinking habit, historical background, traditional customs, social system and idea, the color word metaphor also exists certain differences. Therefore, Understand and master the differences of the color word metaphor can help to get a better understanding of the Eastern and Western culture and also is good to translation practice.

摘  要

隐喻是由喻源到目标域之间投射产生的,这意味着用1个范畴的认识来构建或解释另1个范畴；而颜色词则是语言中用来描述事物颜色的词。对颜色词的研究是探讨语言与认知关系问题的1座桥梁。其中，颜色隐喻认知是人类认知世界的1个重要认知工具。本文从认知的角度对英汉语言中的颜色词的现实来源和文化来源这两个方面进行了研究分析，得出了以下结论：由于人类具有的生理机制和视觉神经系统的同性使得有关颜色的隐喻有其共同之处；而由于认知方式、思维习惯、历史背景、传统风俗、社会制度，加之观念等的差异，使得有关颜色的隐喻也存在1定的差异。因此，了解并掌握颜色词的隐喻差异，对中西文化及翻译实践有1定的实际意义。
