Stylistic Research in Sports News English

Abstract

Simply defined, stylistics is a discipline that studies the ways in which language is used; it is also a discipline that studies the format of language. The functional stylistics considers that language is the symbol of the society. Since the text depends on the situational context, the research about the stylistics characters of the news text should be started in the perspective of situational context and find the different language structure between foregrounding and unforegrounding. This thesis bases on the theory of News English, English stylistics and sports news, which proposed by Halliday(1971), through the analysis and comparison of 20 pieces of English sports news, analyze their difference and relation to arrive at the following conclusions in terms of the grammar, form, glossary and semantic meaning: 1) the use of Grammar in sports news English: sentences structure is associated with the publish time of sports news English closely, more often uses passive voice, directed quotation and undirected quotation; 2)the format features of sports news English：divide column, more often use table; 3) construction features of sports news English: more often uses sport terms, nicknames and abbreviation; 4) Semantic features of sports news English. Finding out the features of sports news English can help the readers read the sports news English fast, simply and easily.

摘  要

文体学是学习使用语言方式的规定，也是学习使用语言形式的规定。功能文体学认为,语言是社会的符号,语篇受制于情景语境,因而对于新闻语篇文体特征的研究要从情景语境的角度出发,区分前景化与非前景化的语言结构。本文以韩礼德提出的新闻英语理论、英文文体，新闻英语的理论为依据及他们的研究方法，通过对20则体育新闻英语的分析和对比研究，从语法，形式，词汇和语义4个方面来分析它们之间的区别和联系，得出了1）体育新闻英语的语法使用方面:句子结构与报刊发行时间联系密切，更多的使用平行结构，被动语态，直接引语和间接引语；2）体育新闻英语的形式使用方面：分栏，使用表格；3）体育新闻英语的词汇特征：体育用词的特征，更多的使用昵称和缩写；4）体育新闻英语的语义特征。总结体育新闻英语的特点有助于让读者更快速,简单的读懂或看懂体育新闻英语。
