Abstract
It is often the case that the translator is confronted with some complex sentences which seem to be senseless and difficult at first sight and therefore defy translating. As we know, our native language Chinese is quite different from English. There is really a big gap between the two languages. The complex sentence is the main obstacle in translation. As the version is given to the Chinese readers, it must be in conformity with the Chinese way of thinking and mode of expression. Understanding plays an important role in the process of translating. Without exact comprehension of the true sense of the original, there can’t be accurate translation. The methods of translation such as embedding, cutting, reversing, splitting, recasting will be discussed in this thesis. In this thesis, the differences both in the ways of thinking and in the modes of expression between the Chinese and the English languages are discussed, with the main methods of translating expounded and the complex sentences in Don’t Get Comfortable as examples.
Key words: complex sentences; obstacle;
