Abstract
Mark Twain (1835-1910),a realist whose works contributed to exploring the reality and reflecting the ordinary people’s daily life, rose to become a world famous writer, lecturer and traveler before he died in 1910. His best-know works includes The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is one of the most splendid recreations of childhood in all of literature. It tells the story of a boy’s adventure-filled curiosity, fantasy world and his tendency to heroism and idealism. Meanwhile it is more than a boy’s book, and the real key to its success can be sought in its popularity among young readers. On the basis of children’s psychology, this thesis intends to explore in what way Tom Sawyer goes along with the children’s psychology and therefore wins the admiration of young readers. Through his profound understanding of an ordinary boy and the normal history of boyhood, Mark Twain expresses his unconventional point of view on the presumed bad boy who finally becomes a hero. From Tom Sawyer, young readers who are presumed to be bad boy get some relief. By using his best talents, Twain employs his unique style of expression to tell the story to children. Tom Sawyer, on the whole, goes along with children’s psychology.
