On the Chinese-English Translation of Movie Titles
Abstract
Short as the title is, it is nonetheless one of the movie’s essential components and is crucial to its marketing and audience appeal. This thesis analyzes the strategies by which Chinese movie titles have been translated into English. In reference to the advertising and cultural function they are expected to perform, some strategies in movie titles translation, such as informative, aesthetics, commercial value and cultural transformation will be identified. In the meantime, I will also do some comparison between different versions of English movie title translation from different places. Hopefully, this paper will provide some evidence to guide the right principles of movie title translation, thus to help Chinese movie and even Chinese culture to be open to more audiences in the world.

摘 要
电影片名虽短,却是整部电影的高度浓缩和点睛之处,还是影片能否成功走向国际商业市场,打开观众心灵之门的1把金钥匙。本文从电影片名的广告宣传功能和文化传播功能谈起,通过分析众多中文电影英语译名的范例,提出了电影片名翻译时应该遵循的4个基本策略,即信息传递、美学欣赏、商业价值和文化重构。同时,本文还适当比较了1些不同地区中文电影片名的不同英译片名的实例。希望本文所提供的1些相关分析能够对今后华语电影片名的翻译起到1定指导,以期能够帮助更加广泛地传播中国的独特文化。
