On Yan Fu’s Translation Criteria

Abstract

Yan Fu, a notable translation theorist in China, was famous for his   theory “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” which has become the predominant guideline for many Chinese translators. In 1989, he upheld “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” as translation criteria in the translation of Evolution and Ethics. Since it was brought up, scholars have had heated debates at home and abroad. Some approve it. Others disapprove it. Though this theory has weathered many comments and critiques in the last two decades, it still has great influence on today’s Chinese translators. The brevity of his own exposition of his three-word theory leads to different interpretations, and has even caused confusion and heated discussions. This thesis begins with a brief account of his time and life as background, and then makes a detailed study of his translation theory, and finally collects a series of comments on his principle to explore its influence on China’s field of translation. Furthermore, the author makes a practical study of his translation criteria to support the main idea of the thesis.

摘 要

严复是中国著名的翻译理论家，以翻译原则“信、达、雅”3字名扬中外。对很多学者来说，这1理论已经成为主流。1989年，严复在《天演论》译本中提出“信、达、雅”的翻译标准。自这1翻译标准的提出来便引起国内外学者的激烈争论。1些学者赞同，另外1些学者持否定的态度。尽管“信、达、雅”在上两个世纪经历许多评论和批评，但是它仍然对当今的中国翻译学者有深远的影响。严复对他的3字原则的简要阐述导致了不同的解释，甚至引起混乱和激烈的争论。本文首先对他的生活和时代为背景做主要的说明，然后对他的翻译原则进行详细的研究，最后收集1些对他的原则的评价材料来探究这1理论对中国翻译界的影响。此外，作者对严复的翻译理论做了实际的研究来维持本文的观点。
