Gift Giving in England and America
Abstract
Gift giving is one of the oldest social traditions known to man, while one rarely hears about the positives of gift giving. History is also strewn with the negative impact of the process; the defenders of Troy in 1200 BC were still smarting from the wooden gift horse left behind by the Greeks. In cultures with high–context and relationship-driven (as opposed to low-context, task-driven cultures), business is built upon personal relationships and gifts are an integral part of those relationships. In international business, gift-giving is essential to solidify the relationship and to expand the scope of the transaction between companies. Why we should give gifts, what gifts should we give, how we should give gifts. To answer these questions, we should consider upon the material, which contain the reason, the purpose, the object and the time of gift giving. Giving an appropriate gift that is culturally sensitive can help to build a good business relationship. This paper will discuss some knowledge and principles of gift giving though the cultures and backgrounds of England and America,to help people to be acquainted with them, and contributes to a better international relationship.

摘 要
众所周知,赠送礼物是1种很古老的社会传统,但是却很少听说有关送礼的积极的意义,就连历史上也常流传着1些关于送礼的负面影响的故事。在公元前1200年,特洛伊的护城者们就是吃了希腊作为礼物赠送的木马的苦头。在强交际语境,并由人际关系推动的文化里(其对立面为弱交际语境,由任务推动的文化)商业建立在私人的人际关系上,而礼品正是那些关系的1个整体。送礼更是巩固这些关系,扩大公司之间业务范围所必不可少的。为什么要送礼,送什么样的礼,如何送礼,对这些问题的回答要视具体情况而定。这些情况包括送礼的原因和目的,送礼的对象和时间。赠送1些合适的或者是1些具有敏感度的礼物能够帮助企业建立良好的商业往来关系。本文将从英国和美国的文化背景和历史入手,讨论送礼的知识与原则,目的是为了帮助人们了解更多的送礼知识,为建立1个更好国际关系体系提供1点帮助。
