The Female Characters in Katherine Mansfield’s Short Stories

Abstract

　  Katherine Mansfield was one of the most talented English writers in the beginning of twentieth century. Among all those female writers, she was a type of unique. Because of the different notion of women, her themes and techniques were not the same with the male writers, and the world she created was a feminine world. It was her acute sensibility and her power of expressing her work briefly and vividly that make her work seem so extraordinarily alive. In her accomplished works, Mansfield successfully depicted all kinds of female characters, including the pure and innocent little girls; the sophisticated and hypocritical upper class gals; the unfortunate lower class girls; the young inner-hurt married women in middle class; and the lonely old women… She demonstrated all varieties of women’s misfortune, and in her mind, they were also the human being’s.

摘 要 

凯瑟琳•曼斯菲尔德是210世纪初期1位杰出的英国短篇小说家。在所有的女性作家中，曼斯菲尔德独树1帜，文笔独特。作为女性作家，她对女性的定义不同，使得起作品的主题和写作技巧都与男性作家迥异。她创作出的世界是个独特的女性世界，正是她细腻的情感和简洁的文笔才使得这个世界栩栩如生。在其艺术成就最高的短篇小说中，她成功的刻画了人生不同年龄和阶层的女性形象。她写小女孩的清纯，上层社会少女的矫饰，下层社会少女的不幸，老处女的凄凉，已婚上层妇女的隐痛，以及老妇人的孤独等。凯瑟琳•曼斯菲尔德充分展示了各种女性的悲哀，在她眼中，女性的不幸就是整个人类的不幸。
