Destruction and Renewal:Characterization in The Sound and the Fury

Abstract

The stream of consciousness novels stress on the inner experience of characters and reveal their feelings, thoughts and actions, following an associative rather than a logical sequence, without comments by the author. The Sound and the Fury is said to be the first stream of consciousness novel in American literature because of Faulkner’s frequent employment of the stream of consciousness technique in the novel. Through the typical narrative method of the stream of consciousness, the novel depicts vividly the downfall of the Compsons, once a prominent family, since before the Civil War. The characters in The Sound and the Fury have fresh and clear age characteristics and meanings. We can see and feel retarded but kind-hearted Benjy, cunning and mean-spirited Jason, the object of obsession for all three of her brothers—Caddy, and the new torchbearer for the Compson legacy—Dilsey. Through the depiction of the major characters in the Compsons, we sense the destruction of Southern aristocratic values, but also a hope for renewal after the tragedies.

摘  要

意识流小说着重描绘角色的内心世界，以自由联想的方式而非按照逻辑的顺序揭示角色的感情、思想和行为，通常没有作者的客观评论。由于福克纳在小说中熟练运用了意识流技巧，他的小说《喧哗与骚动》被认为是美国第1部意识流小说。小说通过意识流这种独特的叙事方法，生动地描绘了1个曾经显赫的康普生家族自内战前即开始的衰败。小说中的人物具有鲜明的时代特征及意义。弱智但心地善良的班吉，奸诈、卑鄙的杰生，3兄弟之间情感纠葛的中心——凯蒂，以及为康普生家族高擎火炬的人——迪尔西。通过对康普生家几个重要人物的刻画，我们看到了昔日南方贵族价值观的毁灭，但也感受到了悲剧之后重生的希望。
