Abstract

The Scarlet Letter is generally considered to be Nathaniel Hawthorne’s best works and one of the indubitable masterpieces of American literature. The story is simple but it does not go smoothly. In it, Hawthorne remarkably handles the Puritan background, and carefully unfolds the deep shadows from which the grim tragedy naturally proceeds. Hester Prynne, the heroine of Nathaniel Hawthorn’s The Scarlet Letter, who values private self, pursuing personal freedom, humanity dignity, individual rights and so on, gives a heavy punch upon Puritan society. Her rebellion against the Puritanism can be reflected in the whole story, especially her thoughts and behaviors of scorning the holy God, enjoying her desires freely, pursing her individual freedom, saving herself and judging the truth by facts. She fires to the Puritan society bravely, reforming the Old World and creating a new world. She is the real heroine and the fighter in that age. While this paper gives a brief introduction of Nathaniel Hawthorne and the use of the symbolism in The Scarlet Letter, it also tries to analyse her characteristics, especially at the point of her anti-Puritanism, and the influences of her anti-Puritanism on American literature, religion, society, ideology and education.

摘  要

《红字》通常被认为是纳撒尼尔•霍桑的杰作，并且毫无疑问成为美国文学上的佳篇。在这里面, 霍桑成功的以清教社会为背景, 仔细把深层的疑惑层层展开,惨痛的悲剧从中自然逐渐发生。而海丝特•白兰, 霍桑《红字》中的女主人翁，她尊重自我、追求自由、追求人性高尚和个人权利等等，她沉重打击了清教社会。她的反清教思想可以从通篇故事中体现，特别是可以通过蔑视上帝、满足自己欲望、追求个人自由、自我解放和以事实判断真理的思想和行动体现出来。她勇敢向清教社会开火，改造了旧社会，创造了1个新社会。她是真正的英雄和那个时代的战士。本文在对纳撒尼尔•霍桑作简要介绍和分析《红字》中的人物和象征用法的同时，重点从海丝特•白兰的性格特征，特别是从她的反清教思想角度出发来分析她的反清教表现，同时也重点分析了她的反清教思想对美国文学、宗教、社会、意识形态和教育产生的影响。
