论《荒原》的意象

On Imagery in the Waste Land

Abstract

      Eliot’s classic expression of the temper of his age is The Waste Land. This is a poem about spiritual dryness. This thesis is intended to discuss the images in The Waste Land, the most representative works of T. S. Eliot. Eliot uses “wasteland”, “fire” and “water” as the three controlling images in The Waste Land to deal with death and rebirth. With the help of these images, the poet not only reveals a modern wasteland where soul withers and lust presides, but also expresses his desire, hoping to revive the wasteland in the fire that burns away all the evils, and in the storm that might come after the rolling thunders. In addition, Eliot selects the “withering”, the “death”, the “sex” and the “revival” systems to strengthen the theme of the poem and uses them as a reflection of the poets concepts as well as the chaos and dangling state of mental situations of European society after World War I.

摘  要

艾略特的1首能表现出他那时代的经典之作是《荒原》。这是1首关于精神枯竭的诗。本文从意象着手分析艾略特的代表作《荒原》, 重点从 “荒原”、“火”和“水”这3个主要意象来论述《荒原》中的死亡和再生。借助它们的丰富内涵，艾略特不仅揭示了精神贫瘠、肉欲横流的现代荒原和有肉无灵、毫无生活目的的荒原人，而且表达了拯救这1切的希望 — 在火中烧尽1切罪恶，在雷霆训示之后可能降下倾盆大雨中获得新生。诗人挑选了“枯萎”、“死亡”、“性欲”和“再生”这4个意向系统来强化诗人的创作理念，艺术地反映出“1战”后欧洲衰微破败的客观现实和混乱无着的精神状态。
