An Analysis of Violence in Alice Walker’s By the Light of My Father’s Smile
Abstract
Alice Walker is the first one who won the Pulitzer Price in black female writers in America. Many critics consider that her work By the light of My Father’s Smile expresses Walker’s idea of striving the social status for black female strongly. This thesis centers on the affair that Robinson beats his 15 years old daughter Magdalena, and explores the theme of violence in the novel in three aspects: family violence, sex violence and race violence. In patriarchal society, Robinson plans the growth of his daughters and interferes their life by violence when they do against him. Under the control of sex violence, the male use some ill-treated ways to reduce women’s status. Because racialism still persists in American society, the white consider they are the best humanity. Therefore, we should revolt in time no matter what kind of violence we face. Only in this way, all the people can enjoy their own rights, and there will be a peace world.
