Application of Context Theory in English Language Teaching
Abstract
The meaning of a language is not only established by its lexis and grammar, but also by its language environment----context. Different context brings about different language use and different meaning. The meaning which language forms express is inseparable from its context. Language without context cannot express any meaning. Therefore, understanding and analyzing context appropriately is imperative to train students’ ability of language communication and comprehension, and also to cultivate and improve students’ language competence.
In this thesis, the author first elaborates the connotation and features of the context theory in order to make a detailed introduction. Then functions and two concrete applications as “motivating students’ world knowledge” and “cultivating students’ sense of culture” are presented to make a discussion.

摘 要
语言的意义不仅来自于词汇和语法,而且还来自于1定的语言环境---语境。 语境不同,使用的语言和所获得的语境意义也不同。语言形式所表达的意义与语境是不可分割的,独立于语境之外的语言是不能表达任何意义的。为此,培养学生的语言交际能力和理解能力必须适当地了解和分析语境,才能切实有效地培养和提高学生的语言素质。
本文先阐述语境理论的内涵和在英语教学中的特征,使读者对该理论应用于英语教学有1个大致的了解。接着解释了该理论在英语教学中的作用,最后重点就“激发学生世界知识”和“培养学生文化意识”两项应用策略展开讨论。
