浅析《嘉莉妹妹》中的新女性形象

An Analysis of “New Female Image” in Sister Carrie

Abstract

From the aspects of appetency and environmentalism in combination with literary criticism such as naturalism and feminism, this thesis analyzes the process during which Sister Carrie became an independent “New Female” in economics from a girl who just came to the big city from small village and was resigned to some males. Actually, this process is an adapting of traditional conception of feminine idiosyncrasy.
This thesis is divided into three parts. Part one shows Carrie is a “New Female” through her three characteristics. One is her desire is impossible to get satiable. The next is that she doesn’t obey moral standard any longer. The last one emphasizes that Carrie plays a positive role in her rags-to-riches fate. Part two states the influence of the external factors on Carrie. Just under the driving of “American Dream” and stimulation of high-consumption, Carrie becomes an independent “New Female” gradually. Part three analyzes the internal motivations for the forming of “New Female Image”, that is, uncontrollable biological instincts and endless desires.

摘  要

本文从欲望本能和环境决定论方面，结合自然主义和女性主义等批评理论分析嘉莉妹妹如何从1个任人摆布的初到大城市的乡下女孩到1名经济独立的“新女性”，这个过程实际上是对传统的“女性特质”观念的改写。
第1部分，通过嘉莉3个方面的特征塑造出她的“新女性”形象：1是她永不满足的特性；2是她不再遵守传统道德标准；3是强调嘉莉在命运起伏中她的主动作用。第2部分，分析社会环境是嘉莉性格发展外在条件。正是在美国梦的驱动和高消费的刺激下，嘉莉的“新女性” 形象逐渐形成。第3部分，阐述欲望本能是嘉莉性格发展的内在动机。分析了嘉莉的“新女性形象”形成的主要的两个内因：1是无法控制的本能，2是无止尽的欲望。
