On the Translation of Puns in Chinese
Abstract
As a pervasive phenomenon in natural language, pun refers to the use of word in such a way as to suggest two or more meanings or different associations, or the use of two or more words of same or nearly the same sound with different meanings, so as to produce a humorous effect. It is dependent on two contexts which are parallel to each other in form, but in terms of referential senses, one is primary while the order is secondary. What the author implies or what he emphasizes is not the surface, literal meaning, but the deep, implied meaning.
The systematic attention to puns in theoretical reflection about translation begins to appear in recent years. It lies in the notion of puns’ untranslatability, which has been around for a long time. But since the early 1990s, more and more researchers have admitted the translatability of puns and begun to take it more seriously This thesis intends to argue for the translatability of puns by introducing some translation skills such as retention of puns, literal translation and interpretation that could be applied to, without neglecting some restrictions.
Key Words: Chinese puns; translatability; translation skills; restrictions
