Biblical Allusions and Their Symbolical Meanings in
The Grapes of Wrath
Abstract
The grapes of wrath is the representative of John Steinbeck, one of the famous American authors of the Great Depression. Being greatly influenced by the Bible, John Steinbeck uses many allusions, mostly biblical ones, to emphasize the significance of the Joad family and their journey to California. To create the theme, the author even relates characters in the story to characters in the Bible, and models its structure on Old Testament: exodus. Through analyzing the biblical allusions used in “grapes”, main characters and the structure of the novel, and by interpreting their symbolical meanings, this thesis discusses the spirit of the novel — attacked no matter by what kind of distress, the people as a whole will defend their survival without dread.
