On Irony in Catch-22

Abstract

Catch-22 is an ironic, fictional novel by the American novelist,Joseph Heller.It was first published in 1961. After publication, it became a classic masterpiece in American literature history. It employs irony profoundly. This thesis tries to discuss the effect of irony on performing themes and reflecting values of the novel. Firstly, this thesis discusses irony used to portray the characters, such as Yossarian’s helplessness and desperation, Lieutenant Scheisskopf’s foolishness, Milo’s greed and hypocrisy. Then through the use of irony, this thesis discusses how the author exposes the themes of the novel. In the third part, this thesis tries to analyze the use of irony in the organization of the plots and language.

摘 要

《第2102条军规》是约瑟夫•海勒1961年发表的他的第1部作品。出版后成为当代美国文学的经典作品之1。小说巧妙的运用了反讽手法。本文探讨反讽手法的运用在表现主题和体现作品艺术价值方面所起的作用。本文的第1部分将讨论小说如何运用反讽刻画人物．比如约瑟连的无奈和绝望沙伊斯科普夫的愚蠢，米罗的贪婪和愚蠢。第2部分分析作者如何通过反讽的运用来揭示战争的荒谬和人性的扭曲主题。第3部分则讨论作者如何运用反讽精心构筑情节和达到黑色幽默的效果。
