The conflict between Civilization and Nature In Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the U’Urbervilles

Abstract

Tess of the DUrbervilles is one of the most important works written by Thomas Hardy. In this novel, Tess struggles bravely with her fate and the conventional morality, but she finally becomes the victim of her family and the society. The tragedy of Tess is caused by the conflict of nature and modern civilization. This thesis aims to analyze the conflict of nature and civilization in this novel. Tess is a daughter from nature. She has beautiful appearance as well as pure, kind soul; however she is finally strangled by the bourgeoisie morality and civilization. It reflects Hardy’s critical attitude on the capitalism civilization and affirmative attitude on nature.

摘  要

《德伯家的苔丝》是托马斯•哈代最重要的小说之1。在这部小说中苔丝勇敢地和自己的命运以及传统的道德作斗争，最后却成为了家庭和社会的牺牲品。苔丝的悲剧是现代文明和自然冲突的结果。本旨在探讨这部小说中文明与自然之间的冲突。大自然的女儿苔丝不仅拥有美丽的的外表，而且还有纯洁善良的心灵；然而就是这样1个大自然的女儿却被资产阶级的道德和文明所扼杀。苔丝的毁灭体现了哈代对于资产阶级工业文明的强烈批判，同时也体现了作家对于大自然的肯定和赞美。
