Symbols in Invisible Man

Abstract

Invisible Man is the representative work of American black writer Ralf Ellison. It is a novel using many symbols. It describes the process how a young African-American in the 1930s strives for freedom and seeks for his identity in the society dominated by the white. This thesis mainly analyzes the symbolic meaning of the three images: “colors”, “visual sense” and “objects” in Invisible Man, revealing the fact that Afro-Americans are invisible in the white dominated American society. Although Afro-Americans play an important role in the development of the American society, they are also neglected.

摘要

《看不见的人》是美国黑人作家拉尔夫•埃利森的代表作. 它是1部高度象征性的小说，描写了在210世纪310年代白人主宰的社会中1个非裔美国人如何寻找自我身份和如何寻求自由以及想要被白人主流社会接受的过程.本文主要通过对作品中使用的3种意象“色彩”、“视觉”和 “物质”的象征意义的分析,探讨了作者如何使用象征手法来揭示非裔美国人处于白人为主流的社会中被看不见的事实,指出尽管他们在白人为主流的社会中起着举足轻重的作用,但是仍然受到忽视。
