An Interpretation of Jane Austen’s Cinderella Complex

Abstract

Cinderella, a beautiful fairly tale widely known around the world, has become a basic love fiction mode and literary archetype in the world literature. Its popularity reveals the universal Cinderella Complex hidden behind the human being’s unconsciousness.
My thesis focuses its attention on Jane Austen’s Cinderella Complex. It is composed of three parts. The first part looks into the origin of Cinderella as well as its connotation. From a detailed analysis of Austen’s important works, that is, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Mansfield Park. The second part finds the Cinderella Complex is always lingering around the three heroines of the three novels. The last part pursued the reasons why Cinderella Complex always occupied Austen’s mind from two aspects. It can be reached that Austen’s social experience and her personality attributed a lot to her Cinderella Complex.

摘  要

《灰姑娘》这个古老美丽的童话家喻户晓，它已成为中外文学中1种基本爱情模式和创作原型。其在民间的孕育、诞生和千百年来人们对它的传诵和演绎昭示出人们潜意识中存在的灰姑娘情结。
本文主要论述简•奥斯丁创作过程中的灰姑娘情结。分为3部分。第1部分介绍了“灰姑娘”故事的起源及其文化内涵；在第2部分，作者通过分析简•奥斯丁的3部作品中女主人公的形象（《傲慢与偏见》中的伊丽莎白、《理智与情感》中的爱玛和《曼斯菲德庄园》中的芬妮），阐释了简•奥斯丁在创作中挥之不去的灰姑娘情结；最后，从社会背景和个人经历两方面总结简•奥斯丁惯用灰姑娘手法的原因。
