Modernist Features in Heart of Darkness
Abstract
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), an outstanding novelist in Britain, stands at the intersection of the late Victorian and the early Modernist culture phrases, so his writing voices a combination of nineteenth-century and twentieth-century preoccupations. In other words, his works not only reflect some traditional Victorian characteristics but also carry some conspicuous modernist features. This thesis centers on analyzing Conrad’s exploration of human’s inner world, narrative techniques, and symbolism. To be exact, it illustrates the evil of the humanity, presents Marlow’s psychological experience and self-discovery, discusses the unique narrative structure of the novel and impressionism embodied in the text, and clarifies the symbolic meanings of two heroes and certain specific objects. These modernistic features play a very important role in emphasizing the theme of imperialism, colonialism and humanity and also in explaining why Conrad’s works exert such a great influence on other modern writers.
Key Words: modernism; humanity; psychological experience; narrative structure; impressionism; symbolism
